Do not overlook the mainstream attractions. Live music shows are definitely worth checking out. There's always some new talent getting a break in the land of samba and bossa nova. More intimate shows happen at cafes and theaters. Movie festivals, usually in October, feature hundreds of titles from all around the world - including a gay and lesbian selection. TV has some amazingly campy shows and soaps.

Now that you are warming up, let's check out the action at the gay bars and cafes. Don't expect a heavy leather, or an SM scene - this is Rio! Except for the baths, venues are mixed. Gay men are happy to share their space with lesbians, and often straights are also welcome (as long as they behave, obviously). It's what locals call GLS, meaning gays lesbians and their friends.

Dance clubs are open all nights of the week. Start with the ones nearby, and enjoy special performances, hot go-go's, reasonably priced drinks, and a very friendly atmosphere. On weekends do not miss the circuit parties and specials. And if you need to relax, most baths remain open until late...
